Description of the painting by Vasily Sadovnikov Panorama of Nevsky Prospect

V. S. Sadovnikov is a brilliant master of watercolor painting and graphics. His work occupies an important place among the works devoted to the depiction of landscapes of St. Petersburg. The artistic heritage of Sadovnikov is more than a hundred pages with views of the capital, its surroundings, embankments and squares.

During his life, Sadovnikov managed to make more than a hundred views of St. Petersburg, capturing the northern capital from the time of Pushkin and Gogol in his early works, until the times of Dostoevsky and Pomyalovsky in later works.
The most famous painting of the artist is considered “Panorama of Nevsky Prospect”.

It depicts Petersburg from the time of Pushkin. It depicts in detail each building on Nevsky Prospect. This painstaking work from the artist took about five years. Originally made in watercolor panorama was 16 meters in length. Subsequently, it was transferred to a lithographic stone for printing.

The gardener depicted Nevsky Prospect with amazing accuracy, which made an indelible impression on his contemporaries. This work was highly appreciated by contemporaries for its accuracy, because it reflected even the smallest details of the facades of buildings, accurately conveyed the scale and location of buildings and monuments.

However, in addition to the almost documentary authenticity of the landscape of the city, the poetic mood is felt in the artist’s work. Gardeners shows the capital full of life. According to the streets he depicts, people of different classes, horses and carriages walk.
