Description of the painting by Pablo Picasso “Family together”
The creative life of Pablo Picasso can be clearly delineated by the so-called periods: a passion for cubism, active work in the style of surrealism, post-impressionism, mysterious “blue” and “pink” artistic periods.
Considered the work “Family together” in 1903 refers to the period of “blue”. And all because from 1902 to 1905 the Spanish painter worked in dark, cold tones of blue. At this time, he turned to frightening and sick topics: old age, need, all sorts of suffering.
Art critics believe that the tragic suicide of a friend of Picasso was the impetus for such manifestations in art. The author himself in these years, too little joy the sun, being in great need.
Salvation for the young artist were any orders. In 1903, Comrade Soler, a successful tailor from Barcelona, turned to the painter. The client wanted to get his own portrait, his wife and family
“Family Together” was written in a genre popular with French Impressionists – “breakfast on the grass”. We see posing members of a large family: a husband and wife, their four small children, a pet. Each face is depicted with individual features, but the general schematics of the faces are of the same type, which is very characteristic of Picasso.
In the center of the canvas – a crumpled white tablecloth with fruit, an empty plate, a fallen bottle and a rabbit’s carcass on it; on the side – a hunting rifle.
Although the family portrait is respected bluish gamut of the period of Picasso’s work, yet the image is devoid of raid of tragedy. Paradoxically, the blue in this picture seems to be a warm color, cozy, friendly and inviting.
Picasso, as always, was at a height: the canvas became famous in the world and got into the Museum of Modern Art in the Belgian city of Liege.
