Description of the painting by Igor Grabar “Self-portrait”
The picture “Self-portrait” Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar wrote in 1942.
By this time, he had gathered a whole series of paintings on this subject, among which is the well-known self-portrait of the artist with a palette in his hand, written by him in 1934. A little later, in 1947, another masterpiece “Self-portrait in a fur coat” will be written. This is one of his later self-portraits.
In the 1942 painting, the artist depicted himself against a dark background. The left side of the canvas is completely painted in shades
Brown color. And the right side of the canvas depicts a shadow almost black.
The artist is dressed in a coat of rich brown color with a classic cut, under which you can see the collar of a jacket, or a scarf of gray. A collar of a white shirt, buttoned to all buttons, is visible from under the outerwear. Completing a blue tie.
The face of the artist is the same as in previous works, but is covered with many wrinkles.
He also remains faithful to his usual style – small mustaches adorn his face, his glasses have the usual round frame of a dark color.
Self-portraits are one of the many portrait works of the artist. He painted portraits of his wife and daughter.
Grabar is a very many-sided talented person who is constantly improving. He is a genius of art, science, museum and restoration work. Grabar hardworking and diligent, putting all of himself completely into the business in which he is busy.
The artist was constantly looking for new pictorial techniques for depicting objects and people, so his recent portraits are completely different from his earlier works.
To date, the painting “Self-portrait”, written by the artist in 1942, Igor Emanuilovich Grabar is in Russia in the State Russian Museum in the city of St. Petersburg.
