Description of the painting by Boris Kustodiev “Easter Rite” (1916)
Kustodiyev, who managed to combine in his work classical traditions with the national ideal of folk art, did not refuse from innovations created by modern and impressionism. The canvas is filled with bright light contrasts and the delicacy of decorative stylization of the external form. The artist seems to express admiration for the disappearing fair trade and merchant culture of the people. The theme of national holidays is reflected in many works of the author.
The painting depicts the folk church tradition of kissing while congratulating on Easter. The action of the storyline takes place in a merchant’s house. A young girl kisses a man who is old enough to be her father. It gives him pleasure: a facial expression amused. The spectators do not see the faces of the girl, but her embarrassment is noticeable, which the artist emphasizes with rosy skin.

The man has already prepared an Easter gift for presentation – a painted egg, which he holds in his hand. The table is laid in a festive way: it has all the traditional Easter dishes. Two Easter cakes decorated with flowers, and cottage cheese Easter consecrated by custom, adorn. Nearby is a large dish with a whole pile of eggs painted in different colors. Roasted pig and vaa with black caviar talk about wealth in the house. Near the wall with patterned blue wallpaper and a picture hanging above it was a whole battery of homemade liquors lined up on the table. All items are written with naturalistic precision.
In the picture of the monumentally depicted festive folk rite, popular popular traditions were combined with the highest museum classics. The spectator is fascinated by the provincial atmosphere of folk rituals and rituals.
