Description of the painting by Raphael “Self-portrait”
The portrait of the painter and architect Raphael was completed by him in 1506, when his author was twenty-three years old. On a neutral olive background, we observe the face of a young man, located half a turn to us. He looks from the picture with a slightly detached, dreamy look. It is evident that the young man is full of serious thoughts. His face is a little saddened, he hides inside his soul some secret anxieties and sufferings.
The structure of the face of the hero of the picture suggests that we face a resolute man, with a strong will and full of plans and a thirst for creativity. In it sleeps a hurricane of passions, but it shows us only a fraction of its thoughts. This person is able to hide his true feelings in the guise of polite indifference. He considers the audience unworthy to read in the eyes of all his sublime thoughts.
The young artist is dressed in a white shirt, over which a strict black robe is put. On the head of Rafael wearing a small dark hat. Thanks to such a detailed description of the appearance, we can say that the author of the canvas took care of his appearance, but did not want to focus on it. He seeks to show a simple image, which in fact was carefully thought out.
Dark colors of the canvas help us to feel sympathy for her character. Light greenish, golden, brown and orange hues give the work of Raphael tender notes of melancholy. The artist uses a minimal set of colors, which allows him to focus only on the emotions depicted by expressing the eyes of the hero of the canvas.
Self-portrait depicts all the best features of the artist, he is young and beautiful. The soft outlines of the mysterious eyes, elegant straight nose and tender lips give the image in the picture a small femininity, a relaxed posture and a magnificent posture convey nobility.
