Description of the painting by Vladimir Makovsky Explanation

Ingenious master of genre paintings, V. E. Makovsky wrote in 1891 the painting “Explanation”. This time he is not only a skilled painter, but also a subtle psychologist. The ability to capture on the canvas intimate spiritual experiences worthy of great admiration.

In the “Explanation” we see the everyday scene. In the apartment flooded with daylight are a young man and woman. The decor of the rooms causes positive associations. Various painted pieces of furniture are put on the painted varnished floor. The girl is sitting at the piano, a man stands nearby, slightly leaning on a musical instrument.

As you might guess, the young man is explained in the feelings of the lady. There is no doubt about the sincerity of his experiences. Everything in his being speaks about the extreme degree of embarrassment. His face was covered with a shy blush, his gaze was downcast, his cap was awkwardly clamped with

his left hand. The man is very worried about the situation. How will the beloved perceive his words? Will they find a response in her heart? Would she agree or refuse? We unwittingly have to empathize with the hero of the genre painting.

The man is dressed “spick and span”: white top, black pants, cleaned shoes, beautifully combed hair. The girl also looks elegant and elegant. She is wearing a red polka dot blouse, a long fluffy skirt, an unusual hat. However, she was unlikely to prepare for the explanation. You can see her look frozen in surprise. The lady is also embarrassed and does not laugh at the look on the lover. The whole picture is permeated with spring romantic mood.

The front room where the characters are located is somewhat darkened. But the distant one is heavily illuminated by sunlight. It creates a festive atmosphere and forebodings of happiness. This emphasizes the color scheme of work with an abundance of glowing blue, yellow, light green tones.
