Description of the painting by Mikhail Vrubel Venice

Mikhail Vrubel is a famous Russian artist who paid great attention not only to the writing of the beauties of his homeland, but also trying to convey to the Russian audience the charm of what he saw abroad.

Between 1891 and 1894, the artist travels around Europe, visits Venice, Paris, Milan, Rome, Athens, and happens in Spain. The main goal of the journey is to see the world and get inspiration for creating new scenes, which we managed to see in large numbers, ideas just poured in, the artist could only make them come true. So, after visiting Venice and returning to Russia, Vrubel paints a decorative panel of the same name and presents it to Dunker’s house in the capital.

On the canvas, written in the spirit of the Renaissance, Venice is depicted in all its glory, at the height of the great Venice Festival – one of the oldest festivals in the world. In the center of the picture are two women dressed up on the occasion

of the holiday, behind them a street full of buzzing crowds and ancient buildings, among which the edge of the Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs are clearly visible. The side of the panel is occupied by a patrician, he peers into his neighbor opposite, apparently there is a quiet conversation, secrets are born and are revealed.

When writing the canvas, the artist used photographs, believing that there was nothing unnatural in this, since photographs of those places where one would never be able to visit, or photographs of places whose memories are weak to the artist can become an indispensable assistant in his work.

The picture, in general, is gloomy and it’s impossible to understand how much the events depicted on it are, as the Italians themselves believe that a carnival is not subject to such a concept as time, which means it’s quite possible that the artist could meet his characters personally in one of his trips around the city drowning in a festive carnival procession.
