Description of the painting by Efim Volkov Spring

In the works of Efim Volkov (1844 – 1920) nature occupies a special place. Immensely admired by the beauty of Russian nature, the painter during his life created a wide variety of landscapes in Central Russia. The picture “Spring” was painted with special love, which appeared in 1880 and depicts a quiet, remote corner of the earth.

In this picture, the spring season is just beginning, and trees without foliage still rise from high snow drifts; but the snow has already melted in some places, and the low areas are already filled with high melt water, slowly pouring over the entire visible space and threatening to flood the small structure, which is slightly visible in the background.

This landscape is characterized by calm, soft colors. The subtlety of shades gives the impression of clarity and purity of air, typical of early spring. The depth of space, shown by the light play of light, is complemented by reflections of trees in the water. In his picture, the artist managed to subtly and clearly write out each element, which in many ways makes it possible to feel the realisticness of the image, to imagine the plot with our own eyes, as the author of the work himself probably observed.
